Doctors of Internal Medicine, or “Internists,” specialize in adult medicine and have had special training focusing on the prevention and treatment of adult diseases. Internists provide primary care to adults and are equipped to deal with problems ranging from the common cold to complex medical issues.
They are specially trained to:
- Handle multiple chronic illnesses at the same time.
- Care for their patients in many settings – in the office or clinic as well as during hospitalization.
- Help patients gain an understanding of wellness, including disease prevention and promotion of health.
- Act as consultants to other physicians to help solve puzzling diagnostic problems.
